Lace from POLAND!

Yesterday a package was delivered to us from our relatives in Texas.  It was a medium sized box and we were so excited to open it up. Yes, it was a box of lace!!! My Aunt Janis was cleaning out an old trunk when she found a whole stack of lace that came from Poland from way up in my family tree! How exciting is that!?

There were some pieces from the 20s and 30s too like two of these really awesome crocheted hats! Most of the lace is crocheted, but there are pillow case edgings, doilies, tea towels with edgings, and doily place mats. But the pieces that I am most excited about are the pitcher covers! I've had a dear friend of mine as for a tatted pitcher cover and now I have one to model mine after! So excited, had to share!

Such an exciting parcel! I'm thinking that a pitcher cover is like the 'milk jug covers' we use in Africa to keep flies out of the milk?

Jane, oh my goodness! The lady that first talked to me about the idea of pitcher covers lived in Africa for some years too! Yes, they must be the same thing! How cool that you knew what they were too.

Thanks for the comments everyone! This box of treasures was just too fun not to share :)

Pitcher cover is very interesting. I grew up in Central IL and 50-60 years ago most homes in my area had "doilies" like that. After dipping them in starch and pinning to wax-paper-covered or Saran-wrap-covered cardboard. The "poufs" at the edges were stuffed with crumpled saran wrap until dry so that the finished starched doily had standing waves around the edges.

Such beautiful lace pieces!

How cool Dora! That is what I do to my doilies when I'm done - pin down the starched lace on saran-wrap covered cardboard. I love the idea about the waves on the edges! I'll have to try that :)

starching the pitcher cover will really jaz it up with the outer ruffles.
tatting a doily to have the ruffles -- hmm I am not sure if I have seen a pattern that does that like crochet, there must be one somewhere, I just don't remember seeing one.
you go girl, that would be a nice thing to see.

How cool is that..! I'm half Polish, but that is the side I follow along with the most. I have a friend from there, living here now, who says that she doesn't see it that much over there now. I'm wondering if she just connects with the wrong people. She is not a tatter...she visits over there once in a while.

I was just catching up on blog posts and noticed in the comments of this one that you might be looking for a ruffled edge doily pattern to model a tatted pitcher cover after. I had photos of one that my Grandmother tatted, and went ahead and did the post on it today so that I could share it with you...here is the link to the post http://tamingroses.blogspot.com/2012/08/ruffled-edge-tatted-doily.html Hope that it helps you to come up with a design that will work :-)
