Classic Doily takes on a new color!

Time for a color change! Linda's Classic Doily that I've been working on is getting bigger and bigger! I'm on Round 10 and it's about 7.5" (19cm) in diameter. Because there is a round of all rings next, I thought about a color change! So a band of white rings will join to the previous rounds of light blue. Then the plan is to do that last scallop round of the doily in white as well to keep the colors matching. This doily pattern is already quite a favorite, so I'm excited to go all the way and finish this large doily. What is neat about it is that I could stop at round 9 (where the first scallops are) and that doily alone would look really nice too. But this is going to be my November project, so I'm shooting to finish it by Thanksgiving and then the Tatting Improvement List begins with the New Year! Exciting, Exciting, Exciting! Stay tuned!

Here is Linda's picture of her Classic Doily - I'll take a picture of the one I'm working on once the band of rings in done :)

that is looking very good Allison. the white will set it off nicely.

I have a question, you stated that the first set of scallops is round 9 so I am thinking it would be round 10 that I have a question. that chains look very flat and stretched. are they intended to look that way?
I ask because I want to do this doily at some point and any help from those who have already done it would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Ladytats, yup the long chains are on round 9 and they are what the next round of mostly rings will join too. In her instructions, Linda specifically states not to pull the chains really tight so I left my tension more loose then I normally would. Umi & Tsuru did a blog post about that round being too tight here: http://umintsuru.blogspot.com/2012/10/lindas-classic-doily-completed.html

Thanks for the comments Michelle, Margaret and God's Kid! :)

Just to clarify: the photo in the blog post is Linda's finished doily picture, not my own. I'll be uploading a picture once I finish the round of white rings :) Be Blessed!

I knew that... and am thinking should I wait till she reveals, or should I start before I see it... Hmmmmm. I am so sorely tempted!

How much thread so you think this uses in all? Say of #40?

Fox, it's a beautiful pattern that I highly recommend. I wouldn't do it in a thread size larger then a 20. With all the rounds of chains, I was finding that my thread was fraying and snapping so stick to a good quality thread for this project. Lizbeth has stood up beautifully so far! I'm very pleased with it!

As of right now, I'm guessing that the finished doily would use close to a whole ball of size 20 Lizbeth thread. So Handy Hands tatting says that one ball of Size 20 = 25 grams, approx. 210 yds. Where the size 40 is 25 grams, approx 300 yds. I'm not really good at thread guess-timates so maybe it would only take 2/3 or 3/4 of a ball of size 40??? Not sure, but like I said in the post, you can stop at the first round of scallops and it would make a lovely, 7" doily.
